About Us

VQD is a family business and each member plays a unique role.  The VQD Team can be reached at vqd@VermontQuiltDesign.com.  Please feel free to contact us with feedback, comments or questions. We love hearing from fellow quilters.

This year, we're looking forward to trying some different quilt shows and adding more variety to the classes that we teach.  We were absolutely thrilled for our quilt to be chosen for the cover of Keepsake Quilting's Christmas catalog.  The popularity of our Holiday Cabin series and smaller projects has been exciting and we're planning to expand those product

lines this year.

Kay - Designer, Teacher, Instruction Writer
Kay has been quilting for over 25 years, filling her home with quilted decorations and an entire room with fabric for future projects. She began a longarm quilting business in 1994, providing machine quilting to the local area. Kay also has retailing experience after helping out at a local quilt shop for a number of years during the early 2000s. She has taught quilting classes since 1999 and attended camps, seminars, and conventions throughout the United States. She has organized charity quilt projects, and is active in the local quilt guild, Maple Leaf Quilters.

In 2010, Kay started focusing on teaching classes again and has supported shops throughout Vermont.  She also teaches a quilting retreat at Strong House Inn in Vergennes, VT, which hosts many well-known quilt teachers throughout the year.    Kay was pleased to be invited to teach at Vermont Quilt Festival in 2011 and will be teaching again in 2012.

Allison - Designer, Teacher, "Computer Stuff"

Allison took up quilting in 2003 and immediately got hooked.  She does much of the designing and sewing the prototype quilts.  Not having much formal exposure to the quilting community, Allison often comes up with unique design ideas, such as the green log on the white side of the Christmas Cabin bed quilt.  Allison began teacher quilting classes as Kay's assistant in 2011 at VQF.  This year, Allison will continue assisting Kay in the quilting classroom and has starting teaching some of her friends to sew and quilt on an informal basis.  She is also working on marketing projects and running the website.

Kyle - Business Advice
Kyle is involved in VQD's business, operational and technical activities. Although he has not actually made any quilts, he does know how to sew. Kyle is a residential real estate agent and one of the authors of
Greater Hartford Real Estate Blog.

Jeff - Photographer, Logistics, (Some) Good Design Ideas

An experienced photographer, Jeff makes it possible for us to have good pictures of our quilts.  He is also instrumental in all logistics for quilt shows, helping design the booth, set up, tear down, and figuring out the best way to display everything we want.  Occasionally, he comes up with an excellent design suggestion that helps us break through a "wall" in our design process.

Other fun things VQD does...

Hard at Work, Dec 2011

Despite the lack of snow in the background, it was single-digit

temperatures, so we enjoyed the weather from inside.

Projects in Progress, Dec 2011

We had some sewing time over the Christmas holiday
and this is what we did.

Glacier Bay, Alaska, Jul 2011

We took our first cruise through the inside passage.  In Glacier

Bay, the ship stopped right next to the glacier so we could

listen to it creaking and moaning.  In Juneau, we did a zip-line

tour through the rainforest canopies! Overall, the cruise was

fun and very relaxing (except for the zipping!).

Lake Placid Half Marathon, Jun 2011

Allison runs and Kay walks...we both exceeded

our goals for this race!

Quilt in Afghanistan, Jul 2010

Allison still worked on VQD projects while she was

deployed for a year to Afghanistan (as a reservist). This picture

of Pyramid was taken at Kandahar Airfield, her main posting.

Morocco, Jan 2011

See a potential quilt pattern in the mosaic behind us?

We do and we plan to design a line of small mosaic

quilts, inspired by our visit to Morocco. The country was

beautiful and we highly recommend it to anyone!

Yucatan, Mexico, Jan 2009

Both Allison and Kay like archeaology and wanted to explore Mayan ruins. So we took a last-minute trip to the Yucatan with no reservations, using local buses and staying in hostels. Uxmal (pictured here) was our favorite site for a number of reasons...we even liked it better than
Chichen Itza.

Acadia National Park, Maine, Apr 2009

We're at the bottom of the Beehive trail and climbed up that towering

rock behind us! This is also where we made Acadia quilt.
